Celebrating 125 Years of Caring for the Community

Throughout 2018, a series of special events for employees, physicians, volunteers and our community were held to celebrate Lancaster General Hospital’s 125-year evolution from a humble row home on North Queen Street to today’s multispecialty health system.

Atul Gawande, M.D., spoke to 500 members of the Medical & Dental Staff and other Lancaster General Health leaders April 5 at Spooky Nook Sports. He emphasized the importance of innovation, standardization and teamwork, and the changing role of the physician.

Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health’s ability to achieve this remarkable milestone speaks to our community’s support for high-quality health care and our health system’s increasing commitment to the needs of individuals and families while improving the overall health of our community.

Anniversary celebrations included several major events, including a lecture by best-selling author and public-health researcher Atul Gawande, MD, who encouraged 500 LG Health physicians and leaders to pursue a higher purpose by serving as counselors, guiding patients to decisions that best reflect their goals and priorities.

Thousands of community members celebrated the 125th anniversary of Lancaster General Hospital during a free, family-friendly event at the Suburban Pavilion on Sept. 22.

Nearly 1,000 community and business leaders joined hospital supporters in September for Embrace125, an elegant gala celebrating history and helping create a new Behavioral Health Community Impact Fund, aimed at one of our community’s priority health concerns.

Another 4,000 people attended a grand community celebration at the Suburban Pavilion in September that featured artifacts from the hospital’s history and interactive exhibits and activities that encouraged healthy lifestyle choices for all ages.

On Sept. 15, nearly 1,000 community members celebrated LG Health’s signature 125th anniversary event. Embrace125 marked the launch of the LG Health Behavioral Health Community Impact Fund, which was the primary beneficiary of the event’s proceeds.

We also launched an online, interactive, historical timeline that enables users to trace the history of LG Health, alongside milestones in our region’s growth and development, as well as national and regional medical milestones.

“I am grateful to the men and women of LG Health today and throughout our history; and I’m inspired by their abilities, commitment and compassion to do right by those we serve,” said Jan Bergen, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health President & CEO. “Much has changed in 125 years, but our foundation has remained the same: to advance the health and well-being of our community.”
